The Howard Stern Effect
January 10, 2007 · Print This Article
The new year is finally in full swing as Brian already encountered his 1st douchebag of the year candidate, and we’re barely a week in!
Today’s listener suggested topic is satellite radio. How does it benefit stand up comedy, and is it really worth paying for radio? Plus, Howard Stern has now been hidden away on Sirius for one year. Can he still push the envelope now that he has no parameters, and what kind of legacy will Howard leave on the comedy world.
Brian’s rant of the week is an “oldie but goodie” as he rehashes a traumatic experience he underwent in the Lord’s house, and we wrap it up with another comic making waves in ‘07.

LOL….that lady is a true douchebag! Happy New year Homies! Im in engaged now!
Look at Bonna taking the plunge! Don’t tell me you did it on New Years Eve! Congrats man, it’s a beautiful thing.
First off, Congratulations Bonna! Great news.
Secondly, Brian, another great episode. I enjoyed the commentary you gave about Stern, and I agree. Though he has lowbrow humor, when it is done on his terms, as with most comics, the bits turn out correctly. When the bits, interviews, etc., are interupted with commercials, it just spoils the flow. That is one reason I enjoy podcasts so much, the content creators are able to present their material on their own terms, not on someone elses.
and finally, I have another joke for you guys;
The husband leans over and asks his wife, “Do you remember the
first time we had sex together over fifty years ago?
We went behind this very tavern where you leaned against the
back fence and I made love to you.”
“Yes, she says, “I remember it well”
“Ok,” he says, “How about taking a stroll around there again and
we can do it for old time’s sake?”
“Oh Charlie, you old devil, that sounds like a crazy, but very
good idea!”
There’s a police officer sitting in the next booth listening to
all this, and having a chuckle to himself.
He thinks, “I’ve got to see these two old-timers having sex
against a fence. I’ll just keep an eye on them so there’s no trouble.”
So he follows them. They walk haltingly along, leaning on each
other for support, aided by walking sticks.
Finally they get to the back of the tavern and make their way to
the fence.
The old lady lifts her skirt and the old man drops his trousers.
As she leans against the fence, the old man moves in.
Suddenly they erupt into the most furious sex that the watching
policeman has ever seen. This goes on for about forty minutes.
Finally! , they both collapse panting on the ground.
The policeman is amazed. He thinks he has learned something
about life that he didn’t know.
After about half an hour of lying on the ground recovering, the
old couple struggle to their feet and put their clothes back on.
The Policeman, still watching thinks, this was truly amazing
I’ve got to ask them what their secret is.
As the couple passes, he says to them, “Excuse me, but that was
something else. You must’ve had a fantastic sex life together. Is there
some sort of secret to this?”
The old man says, “Fifty years ago that wasn’t an electric
fence!!!!
First off, congrats Bonna!
Second, I just wanted to chime in as to why I am not a Stern fan, and I think there are two main reasons. Granted, most of my exposure to Stern was from his TV show, so if there is a big difference between what they showed on TV and what he does on the radio then I may be off base.
The main thing I value in a talk show host is sincerity. If I don’t feel like they’re talking about things they want to talk about rather than just what they think will popular with the audience, then I don’t want to listen to them and I feel like Stern does a lot of stuff just because he thinks people out there will find it amusing, not because he thinks it’s interesting. I mean, there must be only so many times that you can find throwing bologna at a strippers ass interesting (no? am I wrong on this one?) and I think he’s crossed that line a while ago based on his energy level when talking to his guests. Stern is by NO means the worst in this regards, I don’t know how many people ever listened to “the Greaseman” but that guy’s show made me want to pierce my own eardrums just so I’d never have to listen to his voice again.
The second reason I am not a big Stern fan is that I don’t like humor that is based on things that people can’t change about themselves. For example stuttering John, or whatever the guy’s name was, from what I know of it was only on the show because Stern thought it was funny to have a guy who had trouble speaking on the radio. I didn’t listen very often so I could be wrong about that. I don’t hate Stern, I just never found him all that entertaining.
Talk radio in general seems like an incredibly tricky business. These morning DJs have to fill around 4 hours of time five days a week, and the ones who do it well are really impressive to me but the ones who don’t are just agony to listen to. I definitely put Stern in the category of someone who does it well, it’s just doesn’t interest me very much.
Great point Brandon, and well stated. I agree that humor that is soley at the expense of others makes me cringe. My favorite part of the Stern show is the honest conversation. When they have an on air argument or tell a personal story I’m hooked. I agree, however, with what you said about only talking about what he thinks the audience wants to hear. It drives me crazy when he’s interviewing an actress and out of no where he asks, “So, are you into anal?”
Brian, a counter point to Stern popping the anal question out of the blue is that, that is what you are really thinking when you see those acteresses. When you first heard of the Pam Anderson video, no one was like,”Hmmm, I wonder if she is baking cookies.” Everyones first thought were,”What positions are they in, does she like the anal?”
Then everyone was like,”Whoa Tommy, when did you get a Boa Const….., What the F>>> I got gyped when I was born.”
But now there are some actresses you would not ask that question to, like say Angela Lansbury or Julie Andrews.
Congrats BonnaB!
Brian- I have to agree with Brandon- the majority of the time Stern’s show is juvenile and lame.. oh and gross. The rare intelligent moments cannot redeem all of the horrible disgusting and offensive content.
Do you own stock in Sirius?
Your #1 Fan
Yeah, that’s not suprising. Women as a whole don’t tend to be Stern fans. Like I said, I’m not out campaigning for Howard, he seems to have done well enough without me all of these years. But you can’t deny the influence he’s had in radio and in the comedy community.
I just found the “Behind the bricks” podcast, but I am a fan of Brians from his MSR days…
That being said, I am a little behind in the podcasts, so I havent heard this one yet.
I moved to the states from Canada about 3 years ago. I didnt get Sterns show in the small town where I lived, so I was excited to tune into him when I moved down here. My excitement lasted about 7 days.
While you cant deny that stern -does- have his moments, you really can only handle him having an idiot stripper on his show with the “anal” question, so many times. Honestly, I laughed the first 5 time I heard it. Now the laughs are so few and far between, that I find it a waste of time.
I got a satelite radio for Xmas, and thankfully its XM, not the -other- one, so I dont get Howie. No loss for me. What I do get, however, is some pretty good stand up comedy. I’m not sure if this was discussed in the podcast, but I want to mention it because I -SO- want to be a member of this community, yet I dont want to listen to the shows out of order…
There are a two or three comedy chans on the XM dial. One is a family orineted one, where you’ll get all G rated programing; anything from Weird Al songs, Bill Cosby, and I even heard the old “Who’s on first” routine. The other chan I listen to is a ‘no holds barred -anything-goes- program. More newer stuff, and -very- funny at times. Its awesome that I got this at about the same time that I started listening to “behind the bricks” They compliment each other very well.
I keep half-assed expecting to hear a Mollica clip on there. What are the chances of that B-mo? You have a CD out there, has either of the Satelite stations offered you millions for your goods yet?
I’ll campaign for you over Stern any day of the week. I’m calling XM right now.
– Your… um… #3 fan.
Thanks M5M. I’m glad you found us. I haven’t had any of my stuff played on satellite yet. It’s pretty tough when your agent is a lazy peice of shit (did I mention I’m my own agent?) I did appear on Breuer Unleashed once. I opened for Jim Breuer once about 5 years ago and emailed him when he got the show. He put me on to talk about being an up and coming comic. Little did he know that I’m neither.
Saw the last 15 mins of the UPC last night BMO. The final hand was 77 vs A9 suited. You did a good job. I’ll have to keep an eye out for it. I just assumed it would be like all other US poker shows and get up here months or years later.
Unlike those other bastards, we appreciate our neighbors to the north. My mom called me to yell this morning because she says my shirt sleeves were too short. It never ends.
Bmo, I cought the show also(I have it set up on my DVR, I get it on WGN) and I was impressed with your hosting abilities. Though I found it humerous that you are much more expressive and animated than your co-host. He seems to just stand there, and you can tell you have had stage experience.
Overall you did a great job, and one of the more entertaining poker hosts out there. You need to convince the producer to let you bring in the KoJack material. I could jest hear you say, “he has a King Jack offsuit, he should push all in. That is a 98%er, and he just needs to go all in.” and then when they loose the hand say,”Well, of course you have to play it properly, and well, he didn’t.”
I like UPC and am continuing to watch it. You are doing a great job.
I Tivo’d UPC as well…. But it didnt have Bmo on it??? The info stated that its from 2007, so its really weird. I’m -really- happy that Brian is hosting it now, the dudes that host this one are terrible.
New poll, who’s the hotter host?
[ ] Shana ’shes back’ Hiatt
[ ] Gabe ‘Welcome Back Kotter” Kaplan
[ ] Norman ‘insert x-wife joke here’ chad
[X] Brian ‘Check-raised by his wife’ Mollica
It was close. Shana is pretty hot, but I think her full-house may be a card short.
