Mmmm, Comedy Diner

October 2, 2008 · Print This Article

Podcast LogoWell, Brian half assed it in September, but it’s a new month and he’s starting off with the best intentions.

Topics on the day include putting together a dvd that no one will watch, why sometimes writing new material can actually hold you back, stand up with a view, a brand new segment that combines combines comedy and pie, and the comics of BTB shine again.  Nurse, can you hand me my dick poking wand?

    Charles the Furst!

But yes, I am glad that you are back and in good form.

  2. Brian C on October 3rd, 2008 2:54 am

Hey folks, just checking in from Kanab, Utah. Heading to Vegas in the morning so Brian let me know if you have any shows in the next couple of days. My plan of doing a few open mics while I’m over here isn’t really happening, I’m enjoying my freedom too much. Or maybe I am just researching new material…

OMG! I was the featured act this week!!!! YEAH!!!!

I can retire now, because it doesn’t get any better then this!

BRIAN - THANK YOU (and I hope you feel better)

… If the featured thing wasn’t enough, the “diner review” was actually about my local club here in Valencia CA… I go to JR’s all the time, and I actually performed there once… the video is terrible, but here is me at JR’s, the comedy bar in the back of Marie Callendars:

Bryan May - If you’re looking for a second “diner” to review, please come out to Sherman Oaks and visit “Smiles” on a Wednesday evening… It’s a night club/restaurant that has various theme nights, including karaoke and hypnotists… I MC the Wednesday comedy night, and we get a lot of great comics standing in the corner stage under the disco ball telling dick jokes to people way over on the other side of the room in dark booths… It’s comedy with an extra challenge… I think you’ll like it, and I’ll buy you a beer… oh, and make sure and have the teriyaki tacos… mmmmm….

If anybody else is in the area and looking for an fun open mic to play at, let me know and I’ll hold you a spot.

Bryan May — I would love to have you do a second “diner” episode at the club I MC in Sherman Oaks every Wednesday… “Smiles” on Ventura Blvd. has Karaoke some nights, magicians others… but Wednesday belongs to comics… There’s a small stage in the corner under the disco ball and the comedians lob jokes over to the booths way over on the other end of the club, the beer is cheap, there’s no two drink minimum and the cover is only $5. Lots of comics, and… well… I’m the MC… ‘nuff said.

Oh, and try the teriyaki tacos… mmmm…

… any body else looking for a fun open mic, let me know and I’ll put you on the list…

thanks for the tip and the thought brian, I’ll be keeping my material. Just thank god that Sarah Palin is as big a moron as everyone thought she was three weeks ago.

Also, 3 Blonde Moms. Is it me, or is that hot?

  8. Nick on October 3rd, 2008 12:55 pm

I love this from Frankie Boyle, Scottish comic in the UK. From Chortle

    http://www.chortle.co.uk/news/2008/10/03/7524/comics_can_be_real_pains_in_the_arses...

‘I think the bigger the crowd, the lower the average IQ. That kind of comedy does tend to be, “Your mum dances like this, doesn’t she?” And I’m like, “Do you know what, mate? Fuck off”.’”

Love it, this will justify when I’m 55 and playing to 13 people cause I’m indie. I’ve been to an arena to see Eddie Izzard and although his performance was pretty good the auidence were a bunch of morons. He could literally have walked on stage and made stupid noises for an hour and people would have laughed. That’s kinda why Steve Martin quit I gather……

Frankie is a funny guy http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=9003343096522002072&ei=2BXmSNXnHpCsiAL5hNStCA&q=frankie+boyle+stand+up&vt=lf&hl=en

I don’t know who it was that asked about starting a room, but whoever it was, here’s my .02: If you can make it a pro-am, that would help build the crowd. If you’re doing an off-night (Sun-Wed), you might be able to pull in headliners or features traveling to or from whatever clubs are in the cities near you. Convince the bar owner to put up $50-100 and/or charge a few bucks at the door. The most important thing for any show is having someone who can close, even if only for 20 minutes.

  10. Patrick AKA Smiley on October 4th, 2008 4:43 am

thanks for the mention on the show brian, although i did’nt think my little blurb was that noteworthy. but yeah, i’ve gotta get my grades up. which has led me to make the descision to take a brief hiatus for stand up. and no i am not quiting, i just need to take a one to two month break so i can get all this stuff sorted out. I’ll probably do it at the end of this month since i’ve still got some shows that i need to do under obligement. bt although i wont be performing i’ll still be writing(the carlin is strong in this one) in my newest gig of writing a bi weekly humor column for my schools paper. so that should be fun.

but enough about my inane bullshit, here’s a question for the board. Should you tell a joke about someone that may shatter there trust in you, despite the fact it’s hilarious. I have a joke in my act about my freinds girlfreind razzing my roomates and I on our video game habits. and she heard it(although I did change the name’s) and now she’s pissed off at me. should i care or just keep going. and what about other jokes in that vein?

  11. Joel Fry on October 4th, 2008 5:43 am

Tell the joke. Chappelle once said, “You SHOULD be a little uncomfortable with what you’re saying onstage.” It’s not your fault she gets offended.

  12. ddd on October 5th, 2008 7:10 pm

hey gang, just wanted to share a really positive night I had a few nights ago — still riding off the high!

basically, I was re-booked at a local comedy night called “I’m Afraid of Comedians” with a format that is usually three comics with 8-10 minute sets and a headliner who will do 20. I worked pretty hard “behind the bricks” to get on the show in the first place (buying drinks and chatting up the comics that run the room, bringing lots of people to the show) so it was nice to get asked back based on a performance rather than the fact that I can bring people (especially since this will no doubt die down pretty fast).

Anyway, long story short: at the end of this show, I was once again re-booked for next month, had another comic ask what i’ve been doing to write such great new material, got booked to do a tight six at another room later this week, and best of all, had the hot waitress give me her number.

So there it is folks, I’ve clearly hit my peak.. all downhill from here.

  13. Nick on October 6th, 2008 10:31 am

I haven’t seen it, but by all accounts it was terrible so I wholeheartedly apologise for Little Britain USA on behalf of my countrymen. We’re funnier than that…..

  14. Ricardo on October 6th, 2008 12:54 pm

” I wholeheartedly apologise for Little Britain USA on behalf of my countrymen.”

I wanted to apologise to our American cousins when I heard that the awful TV presenter Fearne Cotton was co-presenting Last Comic Standing. That clueless bimbo has all the talent and warmth of a Fem-Bot.

  15. the token scot on October 6th, 2008 4:49 pm

“That clueless bimbo has all the talent and warmth of a Fem-Bot.”

Agreed, but to the typical American, merely having a British accent makes a person sound like the smartest person they’ve ever met. Even a Cockney accent would get the same reaction.

Anyway, what do you guys think of topical humor, esp. in the political season? There’s TONS to riff from, but there’s definitely a shelf life, so I’m wondering how much effort to put into it.

  16. Nick on October 6th, 2008 6:21 pm

It’s great time for topical stuff; I was talking about Palin in my debut and how she is a demon sent to fuck everything up for the good people of Earth. One of my (attempts at) jokes was that I hope she and Palin win cause they’re comedy gold. It’ll be boring if Obama wins unless he starts banging chubby interns….

  17. Ricardo on October 6th, 2008 10:15 pm

“Agreed, but to the typical American, merely having a British accent makes a person sound like the smartest person they’ve ever met.

Even a Cockney accent would get the same reaction.”

Hmmm. Russell Brand might disagree with you there …. ;)

  18. the token scot on October 6th, 2008 10:28 pm

    Mayhaps, old chap.

  19. Patrick AKA Smiley on October 6th, 2008 11:46 pm

it definitly is a great time for political humor. i dont generally write political jokes( I’m pretty sure the only one I’ve ever wrote is : “You Know why conservatives are against abortion…because tranny hookers dont get pregnant.”, and i dont even tell that any more) but I’m finding that this election is chock full of comedy gold.

but nick I’ll have to disagree with you about if obama wins it’ll get boring, keep in mind he’s still a politician. it’s one of the universal truths: what go’es up must come down, chocalate is delicous, and the president will eventually fuck up.

also: yes, a british accent does make you sound more intelligent to american’s…or gay. but thats only in the alabama.

  20. Nick on October 7th, 2008 10:55 am

Haha, of course there’ll be jokes to be made about Obama; just as not as many juicy ones if Palin gets in and starts to ruin everything. I can already hear the hacky jokes about a black president….with the bad credit of the world and all……

Chocolate is delicious and the president will fuck up….is that racial?

  21. Patrick AKA Smiley on October 7th, 2008 7:14 pm

i dd’nt intend it to be, the chocolate’s just there because i’m a fat ass

  22. Brian C on October 7th, 2008 9:38 pm

Greetings from LA! I didn’t think that Vegas was all it was cracked up to be, I guess when you hate gambling it’s not the town for you. Still I got to check out the local comedy scene with the LA Comedy Club at Trader Vics and it was a great show. But I must agree with Brian, as big a comedy fan as I am the fountain at the Bellagio was very distracting.

  23. Nick on October 7th, 2008 10:46 pm

Come on Brian, the only thing we’re really interested in is what you thought of Carrot Top!

  24. kempferrulesmoellersucks on October 7th, 2008 11:07 pm

I want BMo comedy and I want it on the next podcast! BMO is hilarious and I haven’t heard his comedy in a long time..BMo step up and deliver since you do fit in the category!

What was up with Brian on the last podcast it sounded like he was stoned..not just Kidney stoned but, drugged stoned?

  25. Joel Fry on October 8th, 2008 7:13 pm

    I have my first booker!

    http://www.cornstarcomedy.com

It’s a brand-new booking agency that focuses on Iowa comics, although it’s willing to branch out. They plan on booking venues all across the Midwest!

  26. Sando on October 8th, 2008 11:31 pm

I’m glad you have a booker, but that site is frustrating. Why the intro? Why that fucked music? What a waste of my precious bandwidth.

Moving away from the site; “what’s the thing with bookers? Is it an “I’ll take anyone who’ll take me”, thing? What made you go with these guys Joel?

  27. Nick on October 9th, 2008 8:20 am

    @Dennis Laganiere
I will do my best to get out to Sherman Oaks on a Wednesday night. I have a second “Tales..” episode that I’m working on again from JR’s.. where I’m sure most of the episodes will come from.. It’s close. :)

Got something to say?
