Let the Festivities Begin

December 6, 2006 · Print This Article

Comedy festivals are on the rise, and as educated comedy fans Brian feels you deserve to know what you’re getting into.  Contrary to popular belief, it’s not like Woodstock, although drugs generally flow freely.

Brian takes you through the experience of a comedy festival both from a fan’s and a comedian’s perspective, and tells a comic folklore about the death of the development deal.

All this plus the 1st annual “Sham Comedian” award, Dave Chappelle disappears again, is crack better than bulimia, and a spotlight on one of stand-ups brightest stars that burned out too soon.

Hey, a mention to the Edinburgh Fringe which is a HUGE festival in Britain! I’ve been two years in a row and it kicks ass……thousands of shows with quality comedians. It’s hard to actually make money there but its good for underground to get discovered. It has a wide variety of prices, quality and genre of shows.

It has the problem that other festivals have but highly recommended for anyone to visit.

    Bmo,
Your reaction when you said Seinfeld was hilarious. Which makes me wonder …are there real rivalries in comedy? people that geniunely have a dislike for each other and not just a dislike of the comedy. Can you see a comic gang rollin up on each other?

Your sh*t aint funny……gimme your chain!

The Comedian Award in Vegas was given to Jerry Seinfeld last year. This year, it was given to Chris Rock.

Liked the podcast this week, keep them going-like the length-keep em long. getting to know more about comedy each week. Keep plugging in live stuff/cd’s of some of the comedians you talk about for lameos like me who never heard of the guys.

seems like the more $$$$$ you make, the more useless crap awards you win.

Just checked your myspace, it says you’re single. Might want to fix that before the bride sees it.

Apparantly the “comedian” award doesn’t have any requirements as do other awards. Personally, I think it should be done like a hall of fame recognition, to where you have to be either deceased or retired for at least 10 years before you are eligible. This would prevent the flash in the pan comedians from getting an overwhelming vote, only because they are on the radar.

There also should be some gauge of quality of jokes. Because clearly, in my humble opinion, a Doug Stanhope, Dave Attell, Louis C.K. is funnier than a Jerry Seinfeld, Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg. The difference is that the first three are comedians, and the last three strive to be entertainers in the sense that they started out wanting to be actors.

The problem is that mainstream audiences aren’t acustomed to seeing a comedian, rather a funny actor. John Lithgow is hilarious, though he isn’t a comedian and on the other hand George Carlin was great with his older stuff, yet he sucks as an actor. So where the problem lies is that most of the chosen comedians for this award are, for a while, going to be palatable, non-controvesial, mainstream, crossover types. Seinfeld, Chris Rock were already chosen, so what is to come will probably be an Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell or Rob Schneider type.

Yes, I do find humor in these guys performances, but they are comedic actors, not comedians. Also, the comedians that are seen by the mainstream, such as Carlos Mencia, Dave Chappelle and even Jerry Seinfeld, are remembered for the shows that they were on rather than the comedy bits they performed. I guarantee noone that has watched only comedy shows can name a truly funny comedian who only performs standup.

By the way BMO, I got Norm McDonalds latest CD on your advice, and it is great, worth having in my collection. I also got Brian Poesehn’s Nerd Rage, it is damn funny!

  10. brian on December 12th, 2006 1:43 am

Yeah, nothing is as hilarious on radio as physical comedy

  11. Snappy on December 12th, 2006 11:02 am

    Hey Plow13,

Spike TV shows tons of Stooges reruns (as if we could see first run shit) during the weekends. Not sure if you get that network, but they are good for a chuckle every now and again.

BTW, there is a good article on the Stooges at the website findadeath.com, seems one liked the women, one liked the ponies, one liked the booze, and the other liked trying to save the rest. I know I listed four, but there were four. Larry, Curly, Moe and Shemp. Anywho they died pretty much broke, sad really

  12. Plow13 on December 13th, 2006 4:05 am

i love hear sound bites from them! nothing is better than curly….but i should also clarify that i was drinking at the time of that post…so basically i was bored and i wanted to see 3 stooges and i guess i drunk posted?!?

Got something to say?
