I Think It Would Sound Something…Like This

February 7, 2007 · Print This Article

After the most successful week in Behind The Bricks history, Brian thanks the fans by spending some extra time on listener thoughts and questions.  Topics include Bobcat Golthwait, taking the plunge, kinky sex and genital mutilation.

Brian also welcomes in a true up and comer in the comedy world, 19 year old Joel Fry who in his short time on stage has killed, bombed, and seen an 80 year old man cry.

We wrap up the show with rants on impressionists, Valentine’s Day, political correctness, and a spotlight on a comic legend who’s honest ’til it hurts.

    Bmo,
You didn’t say Afro American……Michael Richards said that. “On your Boo….you suck” episode you busted his balls for saying afro-american…….he’s a jerk.

Thank God. It didn’t sound like something I’d say, but considering my lack of a mental filter, there’s no way of telling.

    Hey B-Mo,
Great show this week! Especially since I got a shout out on it!
I do have some comments though:
How can you not go to a pajama party a group of women are throwing? You know a sexy pillow fight will break out! Bring a couple of boxes of the finest Chablis, and watch the feathers fly! It has to be better than hanging at a smokey bar, watching some hairy, shirtless, potbellied, nightmare trying to pump-up the Chicago fans screaming “they’re gonna come back”.
Next, did you notice Joel said he was happier to get to a “Whiter” audience? What kind of audience do you get in Iowa? Nice call for black history month. Maybe he said wider, but whiter was funnier. Good luck to Joel, he seemed very quick for 19 and picked up on many of your jokes and fired back on topic. Kudos!
I have listened to Bob and Tom since I was a kid, and the comics they have on are the best of old school, and up and comers. They have a guy named Greg Hann who everyone should check out.
As for impressionists, check out Stand-up Orlando’s last episode and listen to the call from Arnold the Governator, it’s spot on, probably the best I’ve ever heard. I do have to disagree about Kevin Pollak; he actually does make his impressions very funny and original. I know you mentioned that but you should have used a better example.
Finally, as I’m sure we all are collectively saying now,
My advice is, if your in high school and a $3 card can increase your chances of getting some panites, buy a dozen and hand them out. If you get a 25% response rate you may get laid! Putting $30 worth of gas in your car and driving around will just make you look creepy.
Sorry I’m so windy, but it was a good show!

  5. brian on February 8th, 2007 1:13 am

Thanks for the clarification Mike. I remembered your title as the official poker midget, so I thought i was cleaning it up. I guess I should have left it as is.

  6. bellysk8er2005(mike) on February 8th, 2007 5:24 am

i just the kinda kid that dosent mind being called a midget or a little person it just i find it more fun to use it to my advantage like when some threntens me my line is “you cant punch a midget it agsit the law” hence the reason i turned out to be cocky agist bully becuse they are always afrid to do some thing to me. the other thing is my fav pick up line for a gril that never works but is a funny is hell that i like to you is”hey babe i didnt know they made you in my size” i can never get them for some reason

B-mo, you should definitely try to listen to some bob and tom. They really do more for more comedians than Stern ever has or ever will. Stern will help out a select few, but Bob & Tom give pretty much any comedian a shot on their show (unfortunately the only location in Nevada they have an affliate is way up north in Elko- though they are also on the air in Flagstaff).

If you go to their friends of the show: http://www.bobandtom.com/gen3/guests.htm

  8. Joe - Unimpressed on February 8th, 2007 3:11 pm

    Hit the wrong button :(

Go to that show, it lists the comedians (and guests) they have on their show a lot.

  9. NorCal Sports on February 8th, 2007 4:01 pm

I liked the kid you interviewed for the show. Didnt know kids from iowa were smart…haha

Joe-that was the funniest joke of the week so far.

Brian I have a question for you-Do any stand up comics get “sponsorship” money. I know you talked about development deals, but traveling is expensive do some comics have backers or sponsors when they are starting. Do you ever see the day where comics might wear a certain logo for extra money?

Thanks-love the show-I let my friends know they should download.

  10. brian on February 9th, 2007 6:18 pm

Thanks NCS, hopefully every one will spread the room because as the community grows, the shows will get better. I also love your question. I’m definitely going to use it as a topic on an upcoming show.

    BMO!

    WTF!?

I have apparently been living under a fucking rock. I only just happened to stumble across this site while looking for something at work (don’t ask). I had no idea that this was around.

I personally never liked Impressionists myself. I’ve always preferred Surrealists or Dadaists… oh wait… uh… nevermind… I thought you were… talking about something… else. Heh. Impressionists are simply people who rely on gimmicks to sell themselves in a similar vein to Larry the goddamn Cable Guy or god forbid Carrot Top, who by the way I believe has the same doctor as Shaun Merriman. It may be funny at first, but after a while the whole act become old hat. I can only think of a few people who have managed to turn a gimmick into a successful, lengthy career. the one that stands out most in my mind is Dangerfield. He had the whole self-deprecating schtick but he never let it be his hole identity as a comic. Dangerfield was able to have success in movies that were funny whereas no matter where you see Michael Richards he is always playing the same character, lanky clumsy and mentally deficient.

I have a suggestion for the highlighted comic for February: John Witherspoon. Dude is hil-lar-i-ous.

I think mike sounded more like Donald Duck in his rant than a “little person”… Is there something you want to tell us, Mike?

  13. (In Need of An Alias) Nick on February 10th, 2007 2:55 pm

Good point point about racism and what a comic can and can’t say.

An interesting point to mention that a year ago in Britain, a bill was defeated in Parliament called Racial and Religious Hatred Bill. The bill was trying to restrict offensive and incitive speech towards people of other religions and race but it really strove to curb free speech.

The reason I mention this is because the most interesting thing about it is that loads of comics (led by rowan atkinson, of blackadder fame) campaigned against it; rightly saying that it would poissbly restrict their act and their free speech. I remember one of rowan’s quotes being ‘The right to offend is more important than the right to be offended.’ Sounds pretty harsh but this bill would have been too if passed.

Sorry to be all boring and political but hey, thats my day job!

Although, this law would have been no where never the juggernaut that is the PATRIOT Act….dunno how you lot live over the pond!

    Nick

  14. Phenom on February 10th, 2007 9:09 pm

Bmo, would you consider Frank Caliendo an impressionist, or a stand up comic who incorporates impressions into his act?

I think he’s very funny, but his material does get old quite quickly, as he doesn’t have a lot of it. Since he has limited material, I think his 2-3 minute segment he does every week on Fox’s NFL Pregame Show is ideal for him.

  15. bellysk8er2005(mike) on February 11th, 2007 5:49 pm

uh no there notting i really need to tell you um i stand at 4′6. but oddly enough my dad dose a really good impression of D duck so it odd that you should say that. the other thing is i like being short i get jokes on me and it fun to bs about it than be one that is “im not a midet im a little person” type of guy

  16. leonardo lugnut on February 12th, 2007 2:43 am

I never cared for Bob and Tom, for teams like that I like Don and Mike. Phil Hendrie has to be the funniest radio show in history, I miss him terribly (he retired last year).
Also, he turned me on to The Trailer Park Boys, tremendously funny Canadian TV series. Skip The Trailer Park Boys movie, though. But the show is as good or better than Arrested development, The Office (both versions), Family guy…

  17. leonardo lugnut on February 12th, 2007 2:45 am

by the way, Trailer Park Boys, download from Gnutella…

  18. Darcy on February 12th, 2007 9:45 pm

Trailer Park Boys is filmed about 3 hours from where I live. If I could make one suggestion, it would be to watch the episodes in order. The first season kind of blows, but the 2nd and 3rd seasons are unreal. They have jumped the shark with the movie, but what an original series. Some of the jokes you have to be Canadian to get, but for the most part it is a really original and funny show.

As a side note, the TPB’s are always around my region. They will go out to bars in character, it’s hilarious. Julian will have about 15 rum and cokes sitting in front of him from all the fans buying them drinks. The guy who plays Randy used to be a sales rep for a local bottled water company. And J-Roc grew up about 3 blocks from where I presently live in Charlottetown.

BMO, download this show (I have no idea how) and do an episode on it. Remember to watch them in order. You can’t go wrong with a series that has an episode entitled “Fuck Community College, Let’s Get Drunk and Eat Chicken Fingers.”

  19. brian on February 13th, 2007 12:17 am

Great call on Phil Hendrie, Leonardo. I used to love that show. you want to talk about brilliant originality, it doesn’t get much better than him. It’s one thing to be the first person to do something, but to be so original that no one emulates you, that’s legendary.

  20. Steve on February 13th, 2007 5:18 pm

    Brian!

I just received your comedy CD, “Private Investigator” and me and my friends had a great laugh while listening to it in the car. Thanks for the CD, I would definitely suggest others give it a listen!

PS. I especially loved how quick on your toes you were toward the crowd. I love funny crowd interaction.

  21. brian on February 13th, 2007 10:16 pm

Thanks Steve. I’m glad you enjoyed it. I’m hoping to put together a new CD around Christmas time. Although if I do that I may officially be out of material, so maybe I should rethink it.

  22. leonardo lugnut on February 14th, 2007 12:41 am

I don’t want to make this a trailer Park Boys fan site, so this is my last mention, but Darcy mentioned the episode names, and they are all comical. An episode titled ” If I can’t smoke and swear, I’m fucked” is something a charactor tells the judge at his trial when she informs him he can’t do those things in court. Notice no problem for Julian to have a drink in hand, though, as always.
As regards to black comics, they mostly seem funnier to me than white comics, as a generality. At least, give me an example of a black Carrottop, he wouldn’t have survived as a child long enough to become a comic in the first place. Maybe it’s because I can’t relate to the situations they describe, i dunno, but I think your AVERAGE black comic might be funnier than the AVERAGE white comic. I hope this doesn’t make me racist somehow.

  23. leonardo lugnut on February 14th, 2007 12:44 am

Also, why is Eric the Midget from Howard Stern calling in trying to pass himself off as a guy named Mike? I’d recognize that voice anywhere.

Got something to say?
