Great time for me to go out on a limb and predict Ralph Harris is destined to win LCS, about 2 hours before he gets voted out. This is why I’m such a shitty gambler. Every one of my hunches is wrong.
You need to do that Costanza thing… whatever your first instinct is, do the opposite.
I *still* think Amy wins it. Because she’s a female - and no female’s won… and what a story - what with her coming from such a bad NY upbringing… and having to wear that bikini on TV and whatnot.

I’m not gonna go and say who I think is gonna win. My guy already got voted out Brian, so don’t worry if you aren’t the only shitty gambler on the boards. I think Gerry Dee had the best set last night. This week I thought Amy’s set was punny, but nothing particularily stuck out. Could she be running out of material? I don’t remember Latrell’s set anymore, but I do remember his line about not being like white kids, and I wasn’t laughing particularily hard during Jon Reep’s as well. Sad to see Ralph Harris go, even though he got Matt Kirshen out (My personal pick to win the show). :-(. But I liked his brand of comedy. So basically, I think Gerry Dee will win now, he has been consistently pretty good and funny.
I got another question for the comics on the board. More out of curiousity, rather than advice though. So if you don’t feel inclined to answer, so be it. What is the weirdest place you have thought up of material? If there is a story on why its so weird, even better.
On another note, (Oh the things I will do to avoid working on my English Paper), congrats to Smiley on winning the Original Joke of the month contest. Brian, when is your new CD coming out?
And finally, an idea for a topic of the week; inspired, by (just to cause you more trouble Brian) Mike (Really). What is your top 10 (actually top whatever, as long as there is a list) of Hacky subjects and jokes?
And whoever did the joke of the week this past show (sorry I forgot your name, and am too lazy to look it up). I enjoyed your joke. I have a similar (probably another common thought) bit, I wanted to work out, in preperation for possibly doing a set for my school talent show. It was pretty different from your bit, because jerking off seems to be a taboo topic to talk about at school. Will wonders never cease.
Ok, that’s a lot of random thoughts right there. I really should go do my homework.
Mike (NR)
p.s. I think I might use that as my stage name. Oh and Brian, it doesnt have to be a topic of the week, but what’s your take on stage names? maybe we’ve done this before. I have horrible memory. another great thing to help me out in school.
Oh, so I guess I did say who I think is gonna win.
I love the Larry Miller bit.
Though my favorite joke from Larry Miller.
Women say they think about sex too. HA! Not even close. That’s like the difference between shooting a bullet and throwing it.
I caught about 2 minutes of the Saget special a few days ago and I didn’t come close to laughing.
I avoided the flava flav roast like the plague. What the hell happed to roasting funny talnetd peopple (who deseve the attention) who could then go up and be funny and intellignet at the end of the roast?
I think Pardo is really funny. I love his podcast and I thought his cd was really funny. for whatver reaon his crowd work worked for me fine in the CD format. If I remember corectly, you could hear the crowd well enough to get what was going on with his interactions, but i can see how a lot of crowd work won’t work on CD.
I need to learn how to type and proofread.
(Speaking like an old man) I remember Larry Miller during the boom in the ’80s with Belzer and several others being on A Night at the Improv. Funny thing is most of them at one point or another have ended up on Law and Order (Belzer’s a regular on SVU and Miller was on the original show a few times I think (I know he owned a comedy club in one). What is it with all these older comedians becoming dramatic actors? Robin Williams has done it Martin Short, Eddie Murphy, Paul Rieser. Have all of them just gotten too jaded when it comes to comedy?
I caught a little of the Roast (Flav) it was better than I had anticipated but still not all that. Carrot top needs to just stick to colleges he’s awful. I swear I saw a movie where someone had a grandfather clock around their neck in the ’80s. I wouldn’t doubt it had been done in more movies than that either. Carrot top is the poor mans Gallagher IMO, which is pretty damn sad. Kat did OK Giraldo was good too but, bottom line, it feels like they’re doing these for the sake of doing them.
LCS: The show is a joke and the finalists are the punchline. That’s all that needs be said.
BTW the funniest thing I ever heard in relation to Bob Saget was the tourettes guy shouting his name like one would an obscenity, which oddly enough, was the funniest thing about tourettes guy.
I’m rooting for Gerry Dee because I like story tellers, but I have to admit that he seems like a prick. On the heckling challenge he seemed to take it way to seriously and actually get pissed off. Don’t go on a shitty reality show then get pissed when you are treated like shit.
The best joke from the heckling bit came from Amy.
“Who let the fetus into the club? I though I got rid of you in college.”
My wife and I nearly died!
cool, i won. i never won anything. now all i need to know is what i won. Also i have to agree on the bob saget special. It seemed to me he was cursing only for the sake of cursing. dont get me wrong i’m a fan of vulgar humor (as my aristocrats joke will back up) but there is such a thing as context. i was very disappointed. However I gotta tell you i’m not ashamed that i loved the flava flav roast. again not as good as learys or foxworthys but still pretty good.
Congrats Smiley!
I just found out Steven Wright is going to be coming out with a new album on September 25. It is going to be called “I Still Have A Pony.”
I saw Steven on Letterman this past summer. He still has a couple of funny jokes, but it seemed like he was trying too hard. Not as funny as his vintage ’80s stuff. This coming from a big, big Steven Wright fan.
I still love Steven Wright but his first album is going to be really hard to top. I really hope he doesn’t just do the same joke he did on “When the Leaves Blow Away.” He said in an interview he has a couple of albums worth of material he has not put on to cd. I’m hoping this new one isn’t just a rehash of his older stuff.
I think his stuff might not seem as funny now because when he came out in the 80’s his style was really oringinal, but after comedians like Emo Phillips and Mitch Hedberg it seems less unique.
I don’t know who I’m rooting for anymore on LCS, but I think I’ll go with Amy more by a process of elimination. I too had been rooting for Kirshen based on what a strong writer he seems to be (the whole holistic, water has memory bit had me doubled over in laughter which is more than I can say for the rest of them) and found Ralph Harris’ win over him to be very surprising, I thought that Diana actually had a stronger set than Ralph the week before when Matt won.
Amy occasionally gets some genuine laughs and Gerry is in second for me, his set last week was pretty strong. Lavell’s set last week was awful, I don’t think he has the patience to tell a joke that lasts longer than two or three sentences, and everything he does sounds like I’ve heard it before although he is a strong performer. I wrote Jon Reep off the second he shook his head while saying “Hickory”.
I appreciate the review of Sagats bit, and have lost all interest in watching it. Sadly, it sounds as if he is grasping for the limelight. Some celebrities just seem to do that after being out of it for a while.
I know he was in Harold and Kumar and Dumb and Dumberer, but those were minor, minor roles.
On a serious note, Brian, you do NOT want to be in the room when your wife gives birth. Should you have to be there, stay at the head of the bed! Birth is not as beautiful as some say. The best way I can describe it is, have you seen that scene in Alien when the alien bursts out of John Hurts chest? It is not unlike that, and twice as scary.
Dude, it will scar you for life!
On the subject of the Flava Flav roast:
Brian asked two questions -
1. Should non-comics be roasted?
2. Should non-comics roast the roastee?
My thoughts on 1 are that there are many people who get roasted that aren’t comics. Recently Hugh Hefner, William Shatner and Pam Anderson were all roasted. And in the distant past Lucille Ball, Mr. T, and Frank Sinatra were all roasted. So I think anyone in the pop-culture should be available to be honored/victimized if it’ll be funny.
My thoughts on 2 are that I thought the whole point of a roast of this type was to get a handful of comics along with friends and family to roast the person. So, yes they should be able to roast em, because that’s the way roasts go. If it was just comics who barely know the person (if at all), then it’s kinda pointless.
Other thoughts on the roast - I don’t think Carrot Top was really upset that others ripped on him, I think that’s his bit. I’ve seen him on other shows where people goof on him and he pretends to be offended. I think he knows the only real joke in his shows, is him.
Overall I really liked the roast, but I’m easy to please with those things. I laughed nearly the entire time. I also thought Snoop’s part was pretty good. Does anyone know if the non-comics get their stuff written for them?
Oh, and did anyone else notice at the end when Flav was talking he looked over at Jeff Ross (I think it was) and appeared to get mad and say how his jokes were too racist and not cool. Was he really mad at him? Sounded like it.
Oh, and since there’s now another Cody on the comment threads here, I’ll switch back to my poker username I used at B-mo’s last poker and comedy podcasts at MSR - FalloutFish.
One of the true tragedies in life is that I’m not having children a generation ago where the man smoked in the waiting room. I have no desire to witness this “miracle” but that is not an option in this household. I’ll make sure not to peek behind the screen.
Brian,
When my wife was in labor with #1 of 4 she bit me. So i found it better to stand at the end with out teeth. Which now that we are older could be ether end if i hide her dentures. By the way now a days there are no screens. They will have her business on display. With our first there was 5 high school vacational students watching and my very shy wife didn’t even care. The only thing that pissed her off was my request for a bj between contractions. I thought the request was reasonable. Women!
Why did they get rid of Amy Schumer instead of Jon Reep. The man can not tell a punchline without shaking his head. The only way he could be entertaining is if he accidentally broke his neck while he was doing it.
I kind of feel like a dick for saying this, but does anybody else think Josh Blue is really unfunny. I think it is awesome that he overcame his disability and everything but I don’t know who would pay money to see him.
I worked with Josh Blue once and there’s no doubt he’s talented, but I have no doubt that he made it faster and won the competition in large part due to his disability.
Josh Blue seems like a really nice guy and he is super likable, but I just wish he would tell some jokes that didn’t have to do with him having cerebral palsy. It gets a little boring hearing about the same subject for too long. I don’t know if thats what he does on his live shows, but whenever I see him on T.V. he does the same kinds of jokes. That’s why I’m not to big of a fan of Lavell, because all he tells are fat jokes. They are funny but it gets a little boring.
