I love how the comedians call the non comics in the crowd civilians. But I guess that is the best word to fit the non comics. I mean, the comics are fighting a holy war of laughter. The more you laugh, the more the comic wins the battle. The awkward silence, that's the devil taking souls. Pray for the comics people! Laugh and you are doing Gods work!

Wow.. where the hell did that come from.

I'm not gonna lie Matt, I've had some great times doing those open mics. Comics hanging out, breaking balls, it's a beautiful thing...Assuming all conditions are perfect. But 2.5 hours of comics who don't like each other, aren't supportive. Sit in the back of the room talking instead of watching the performer on stage. Never knowing if your material is any good because no one gives a shit. I don't know about you, but I'd rather perform for a small crowd of civilians then hang out with my comic buddies at the bar and drink all night, than be part of a marathon where the comics get nothing on stage and the crowd is in misery because they are being "treated" to an avalanche of inexperienced comics. But that's me.

Here's the thing I'm curious about (and I touched on it in the last thread)... what are the open mics like around you guys? Because I hear a lot of talk (and more of it on this recent show) about how to plan an open mic, and trying to keep the non-comics around, and making sure there's a time cap... almost every open mic in Chicago is a knock-down drag-out marathon of comedians. Some (like the one I wrote about at Schuba's) are super long, but almost all of them run 2 hours... at least. Most of these bars are entirely filled with only comics, and rarely see the occasional "real person" (minus the bar regulars, obviously).

When I hear Brian talk about what he doesn't like in open mics, I think about the key open mics in Chicago, and he's describing them. But I like them, if for nothing else than the community which is built.

Breaking news, Tommy Tiernan breaks Guinness World Record for longest ever solo comedy show! 36 hours, the legend! Heard him on the radio this morning, his voice sounds almost as bad as mine does after shouting for Leinster in London for the rugby on Sunday.
